File the 2025 return. An extension gave you more time to file, not to pay; interest has been running since April 15.

Estimate this year’s tax before it’s fixed. It sets the size of any Roth conversion, harvest or gift in December.

Decide on ISO exercises for 2026
Model the alternative minimum tax before exercising. The exercise has to settle by December 31 to count in 2026.

Last day for 2026 planning moves
Roth conversions, tax-loss sales, charitable gifts and donor-advised fund contributions must be completed by today to count for 2026.

Required minimum distributions due
Take this year’s required distribution. Missing it can cost a 25% excise tax on the amount not taken.

Fourth-quarter 2026 estimated tax due
Pay the final 2026 estimate. Base it on your actual year, not last year’s return, to avoid an underpayment penalty.

W-2s and most 1099s arrive
Start the document list. Brokerage 1099s often come later and are sometimes corrected into March, so don’t file early on a draft.

S corporation and partnership returns due
File Form 1120-S or 1065, or extend. Your K-1 feeds your personal return, so a late business return delays yours.

First RMD if you turned 73 in 2026
Take your first required distribution by today. Waiting means two distributions in 2027, which can push you into a higher bracket.

2026 returns due and first 2027 estimate
File or extend. It’s also the last day for 2026 IRA and HSA contributions and the first 2027 estimated payment.

Second-quarter 2027 estimated tax due
Pay the second estimate. Mid-year is the time to reset it if your income has changed since April.

Third-quarter estimate and extended business returns
Pay the third 2027 estimate. Extended S corp and partnership returns are also due today.
