About Ostrand
A planner and a CPA, at the same table since 2011.
Sixteen people in Denver, serving 260 households across Colorado and 14 other states.
Why we started
Good plans were losing money to decisions nobody coordinated.
Odile Marchetti spent ten years as a planner watching sound investment plans lose money at tax time: a sale in the wrong year, a conversion nobody modeled, a vest with too little withheld.
Kenji Arata spent the same ten years on the other side, filing returns for decisions that had been made months before anyone asked him. They met on a client’s account and agreed the problem wasn’t either of them. It was the gap between them.
They started Ostrand so that the person who plans the move and the person who files the return work from the same numbers, before the year ends rather than after. Fifteen years on, every client’s return is still prepared in-house, and the firm still takes on only twelve new households a quarter.
What we believe
Four ideas we run the firm on.
01
Tax is a planning input, not a filing output.
By the time a return is prepared, the year’s biggest tax decisions are already fixed. We plan them in the year they happen, with the return in mind, and then prepare it ourselves.
02
The only fee should be the one you can see.
We don’t earn commissions, sell products or take referral payments. It’s the simplest way we know to be sure our advice is about you, and to be able to prove it.
03
Boring portfolios, carefully placed.
We use low-cost, diversified funds and don’t try to time markets. Where we add value is in which account holds what, and when gains and income are taken.
04
Say no more often than yes.
Twelve new households a quarter means we can keep our standards. It also means we’ll tell you on the first call if you’d be better served somewhere else.
Our team
The people who’d plan with you, and file for you.
Six of our sixteen. Every client works with a lead advisor and a CPA or EA from this group.

Odile Marchetti
CFP®
Founding partner
Retirement income and family wealth
Odile spent ten years at a national planning firm before founding Ostrand in 2011. She leads planning for families in or near retirement, with a focus on the order they draw from their accounts and when to convert to Roth. She chairs the firm’s planning committee and still runs a full client load. She lives in Denver and spends most weekends in the mountains.

Kenji Arata
CPA
Founding partner, head of tax
Individual and trust tax, planning projections
Kenji ran a tax practice for a decade before co-founding Ostrand to close the gap between planning and filing. He oversees every return the firm prepares and builds the tax projections each plan is based on. He has represented clients in IRS examinations and appeals, and teaches a continuing-education course on tax projections for advisors.

Yasmin Haddad
CFA
Partner, chief investment officer
Portfolio construction and asset location
Yasmin leads the investment committee and designs the firm’s portfolios: low-cost, broadly diversified, and placed across taxable, IRA and Roth accounts to keep the tax bill down. Before Ostrand she spent eight years in institutional investment research. She joined as a partner in 2018 and writes most of the firm’s quarterly market letters.

Gideon Falk
CPA, CFP®
Senior advisor, business owners
Business owners, entity structure and exits
Gideon works with owners from the first conversation about selling to the last installment payment. As both a CPA and a CFP®, he models entity choices, retirement plans for the business and deal structures side by side. He spent twelve years in a regional accounting firm’s business-advisory group before joining Ostrand in 2016.

Teodora Vasile
CFP®
Advisor, equity compensation
RSUs, stock options and ESPP
Teodora works with employees of public and late-stage private companies on vest schedules, option exercises and concentrated positions. She builds a vest-by-vest calendar for each client, with withholding top-ups and a plan to diversify over time. She came to Ostrand in 2019 from a technology company’s total-rewards team, so she has read a lot of grant agreements.

Rhys Penhale
EA
Senior tax advisor
Estimated taxes, multi-state returns and IRS notices
Rhys runs the firm’s tax calendar. He calculates every client’s quarterly estimated payments from their actual year, prepares multi-state returns, and answers IRS and state notices on the returns we file. As an Enrolled Agent he can represent clients before the IRS. He joined Ostrand in 2014 and has prepared more than 1,500 returns here.

After my mother passed, I didn’t know what I had inherited or what I owed on it. They built the timeline for the inherited IRA and filed her final return.
